To conquer the Teatre El Jardí: not even Braveheart could have done better. A programme composed of the amazing exhibition of physical comedy by Eric Koller, the verbal juggling of Godoy, the poetry of Alba Sarraute and Toti Toronell, the excellent shows of Els Gingers and Comediants and the incomprehensible magnetism of the great Chiquito de la Calzada.
Last year the public came by the masses. The clowns of Aga-boom, who made famous some acts from the Cirque du Soleil, triumphed with their paper party. As did the incredible mimes Joseph Collard and Paul Wildbaum, the stars of Sala Apolo and Reugenio, the brilliant impersonator of the legendary Eugeni Jofra. The Teatre El Jardí was converted into a cabaret for the very first time and left everybody in awe. The best humour from around the world, grandly presented.
The Festival Comic was born. Happy days. A beautiful circus tent in the middle of a green space in Figueres, the property bubble about to burst, and Les Bubb, Leo Bassi, Capa i Espasa, Jango Edwards, Yves Lebreton, Pepa Plana and The Chanclettes having fun on stage. Oh, mon Dieu, mon Dieu...! Oh, and an impromptu press conference with Leo Bassi making it quite clear that his Pope of Rome was a better man than the most of the radical Catholics who questioned him.
Premier league artists in the suburbs of Figueres: paradoxes of the crisis. When all was ready to go sudden local budget cuts forced the Festival out of town and into the sticks. The Umbilical Brothers, Avner The Eccentric, Los Dos Los, Gardi Hutter i Orphéon Célesta all performing in a community centre run by the Casa de Andalucía. Broadway and West End artists on a five aside pitch. But the public had a good time, and that's what it's all about.
